In the wake of the Bondi Beach tragedy, a flood of misinformation has spread on social media, with some Indian media outlets pushing claims that the perpetrators were "Pakistani nationals" or linked to Lahore. Verified information from Australian and international sources confirms that the attackers were a father–son duo from New South Wales, Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram (Naveed was born in Australia; Sajid immigrated in 1998). Official statements have not attributed Pakistani nationality to them. Documented patterns show a history of crisis-time misinformation spread by certain media outlets; for example, in May a major Indian Hindi news channel aired a false report claiming "Indian forces enter into Pakistan," which was debunked. International fact-checkers (Reuters Institute) noted a month’s worth of misinformation circulating rapidly. The current narrative appears to follow this playbook, and the innocent individuals affected by misidentification—including Naveed Akram—have publicly urged social platforms to stop spreading his photo as the shooter. The international community should reject fabricated news intended to sow discord and smear Pakistan.
Context notes: a May report by Times Now Navbharat making the claim "Indian forces enter into Pakistan" was debunked, and Reuters Institute documented the rapid spread of misinformation across social platforms.
